You want to be a leader of men, but before you can do that you must be a servant first. This will teach you humility, compassion, and empathy. To be a great leader, you must understand the mindset of the individuals who will be following you and putting yourself in their shoes first will definitely assist you with that. To be a servant leader, you must:
Humble Yourself
There are so many churchgoers who go to church to see what they can get out of it for themselves. Some go to church for the prestige and status of being a good person. Others may attend to see what God can do and provide for them. When one attends church services, the goal is to seek God and ask Him what he wants from you. You hear stories of the ministers who dress up as beggars and homeless people and stand outside their church as their parishioners arrive. They are ignored, harassed, or asked to leave. This is not how a true and humble servant of God will react to this type of scenario. Always remember this verse from Matthew 25:40: “Whatsoever you do to the least of these, my Brethren, you have done it unto me.”
Serve Others
To be a servant of good, you don’t just have to do the obvious things like give to the poor, assist the elderly, love thy neighbor, and give a tithe of your paycheck to the church. You must also make a point to serve those whom you are not drawn to. These people include those who are rude to you, those who annoy you, and even those who steal from you and lie to you. When you have reached this point that you can do this without balking or procrastinating, then you know you have become a good servant of the Lord.
The reason you must go through this is that if you are going to be a strong and effective leader, there are many who will be under your watch that you don’t personally care for and that you may not even want to be in their company. You still must lead them, care for them, and make them part of your overall plan. A strong leader does not allow his personal feelings to get in the way of his decisions and judgments.
Serve God
To serve God, do all things in his name. Whenever you have a dilemma or a problem to solve, ask yourself, “What would God want me to do?” Praise him daily for all he has done for you. Always exhibit a spirit of gratitude to Him even during rough times. God has a reason for everything.
Becoming a leader after being a servant is not easy. All the trials and tribulations of making the transition from servant to leader will just make you stronger. If you become discouraged during your journey, just remember these words from Matthew 25.21: “Well done, though good and faithful servant. Thou hast been faithful over a few things; I will make thee ruler over many.”
